Position Overview

The City of Arnold is accepting applications for the position of Inspector. This position ensures properties and structures within the City meet code requirements through plan review, site inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities. This is a full-time, non-union, non-exempt building inspector position that reports to the Building Commissioner.

Job Functions

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: investigating violations of and pursuing compliance with the various sections of the City’s Municipal Code as they pertain to property maintenance; building; occupancy, licensing, land use, zoning, signage, and nuisance abatement; issuing violation notices and appearing in municipal court on behalf of the City; maintaining accurate documentation and case files; performing plan review and inspection of buildings at various stages of construction; providing assistance to the public by interpreting and explaining regulations and codes; resolving complaints; and assisting in the administration of various permits.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have, at minimum, an Associate’s degree or equivalent (trade school) with training in property maintenance and inspection or law enforcement and two years’ experience as a code compliance or building inspector; or four years journey-level experience in general construction, home inspection, fire service, or related fields with a strong understanding of applicable codes; or any combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent. ICC Property Maintenance certification is required within 6 months of hire. Residential or Commercial Inspector certification is required within 1½ years of hire. Additional certifications are expected to be pursued. Considerable initiative, independent judgement, and professional communication skills are necessary for this position. Must possess a valid driver’s license, strong customer service skills, and computer proficiency.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

Primary work includes walking on all types of physical terrain in all kinds of weather conditions, accessing the inside of buildings, including basements/crawl spaces, roofs, etc. May face exposure to poisonous weeds, dangerous animals, infectious agents, loud noise, sharp or falling objects, and hostile persons while performing job responsibilities. Must be able to lift weight normally not exceeding 30 lbs.

Compensation & Benefits

The hourly pay range for this position is $20.68 to $28.94, with starting wage commensurate with qualifications and experience. The City of Arnold offers a comprehensive benefits package, which includes paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, and employee health, dental, vision, prescription, and disability. 100% of the monthly premium for basic health coverage is funded by the City for single coverage. Pension is with the Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement System (MO LAGERS).
