Legal Aspects of Code Administration

One-day course covers the terminology, concepts, and principles of legal issues that affect code officials in the administration of their duties. This course will assist the building official, fire inspector, code official, architect, or contractor in understanding the legal concepts related to the model codes.

• Identify the legal basis for their duties and responsibilities.
• Gather information that will enable the building official, or building, fire or property maintenance inspector to identify the proper legal entity so that the correct person or company is given permits, stop work orders, certificates of occupancy, notices of violation and complaints.
• Effectively enforce provisions of the model codes.
• Avoid common mistakes made by building officials and building, fire or property inspectors and reduce civil liability.
• Apply the legal principles of the model codes to actual field situations.
• Conduct constitutionally valid inspections.
• Testify in court with authority.
