WASTE WATER SYSTEM INSPECTOR

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

   Starting Salary: $45,608.93  

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position which includes a full range of benefits including Paid Time Off, Extended Medical Leave, Holidays, Employee Health, Dental, Life, Disability, Retirement, and Tuition Assistance programs.   JOB DESCRIPTION:  The purpose of this position is to inspect new and existing septic system installations for code and ordinance compliance. The work is performed under the supervision of the Building Division Manager.  
• Receives code and ordinance violation complaints. Establishes priority for inspection. • Confirms location of complaint. Researches land records, plat maps, property identification numbers and other sources to establish ownership. • Investigates site to determine compliance validity. Tests soils and determines system size/type and best location. Ensures setback and facility installation complies with code requirements. Determines drain field size, insures well and septic setbacks are maintained. Inspects finish grading, seeding and aerator installation. • Takes water samples for testing. • Inspects septic system for correct operation. • Educates homeowners regarding best use of septic system to minimize failure. • Determines violation and prepares “notice of violation.” • Records information on complaint and returns to clerical staff for processing. • Contacts complainant and/or violator and recommends solutions to violations. • Coordinates inspections with other County departments. • Testifies in court as needed. • Maintains records for vehicle and mileage. • Maintains knowledge of applicable codes and ordinances, ordinance enforcement/prosecution process. • Performs other inspections for compliance. • Conducts seminars for real estate agents and contractors. • Performs general office duties. Answers telephone calls, prepares correspondence.   • Provides assistance to citizens regarding county procedures and regulations. • Assists and prepares reports for other county departments. • Assists clerical personnel with ordinance interpretation. • Researches deeds. • Performs other duties as assigned.  

REQUIREMENTS:  High school diploma or equivalent, vocational/technical training in plumbing, building technology, construction or related field, Missouri Health Department certification for inspection of on-site sewage systems for new construction and repairs of existing systems, ten years inspection/code enforcement experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Missouri Sanitarian II license preferred. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
