Inspector II Grade 15 step 1 – 16, $21.33 – $30.89 per hour DOQE with new employees generally falling in the 1st third of that range.

This position is primarily responsible for the plan review and inspection of new and renovated residential construction projects and occupancy of rental dwelling units in the city.

This position is primarily responsible for the plan review and inspection of new and renovated residential
construction projects and occupancy of rental dwelling units in the city.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all
inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs plan reviews for code compliance and issues permits for residential structures and
- Conducts inspections of new residential construction projects to verify compliance with
building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, energy, and zoning codes.
- Completes rental occupancy inspections, provides insight, and issues permits.
- Inspects existing structures for health and life safety minimum standards.
- Assists external and internal customers, city residents, architects, contractors and others in
the interpretation and application of relevant codes and ordinances.
- Receives and responds to citizen complaints and reports from other agencies and
departments regarding alleged violations; interviews complainant and witnesses; conducts
investigations and provides recommendations for resolutions.
- Prepares a variety of written reports, memoranda, correspondence and instructional
- Prepares evidence in support of legal action taken by the city; appears and testifies in court
- Attends meetings and serves as a resource for other city departments, the general public,
and external agencies.
- Performs after-hours inspections during emergencies (on-call).
- Completes commercial plan reviews and inspections when directed.
- Performs the duties primarily assigned to the Inspector I position when directed.
- Other duties as assigned including snow plowing.
Additional Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of relevant building, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, electric, and energy
- Knowledge of building construction practices and terminology.
- Knowledge of relevant zoning, nuisance abatement, property maintenance, building, and
health and safety codes.
- Knowledge of computers, tablets, and job related software programs.
- Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
- Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports
- Skill in oral and written communication
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized
training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the
position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having
had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of
Missouri for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- New hires should possess, or have sufficient experience and the ability to obtain, the
following certifications from the International Code Council (ICC) and in accordance with
Division policy: Residential Plans Examiner, Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector,
Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, and Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector.
Employees needing to obtain these certifications shall produce a timeline to obtain these
certifications, in a timeframe not to exceed 3 years, and the timeline shall be approved and
regularly reviewed for compliance by the supervisor. Note, certification by the International
Code Council (ICC) as a Certified Building Official (CBO) shall be deemed to meet all
