General Purpose of Position
Provides code enforcement of all City building codes
Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Conducts annual or semi-annual fire, health, life safety commercial occupancy inspections
• Ensures commercial building owners are aware and informed of building codes, ordinances, and regulations as
they affect them.
• Performs on-site inspections of new and existing structures for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances,
structural quality, and safety.
• Verifies that structures are constructed in accordance with the approved submitted plans and specifications.
• Responds to property maintenance complaints by researching and inspecting the nature of the complaint,
evaluating the complaint and taking appropriate action based upon adopted codes, city ordinances, and state
laws.
• Maintains written records of inspections, which include: code violations cited, date, action taken, and, if
necessary, follow-up action taken.
• Posts appropriate notices on inspection work, approved or not approved.
• Follows up with stop work correspondence, ensuring appropriate action has been taken to correct the situation.
Conducts residential and commercial plan reviews for compliance with appropriate
statutes, ordinances and codes
• Serves as technical expert on established building codes.
• Provides contractors, builders, and individuals assistance and answers to code compliance questions.
• Responds to public inquiries regarding building codes and related ordinances.
• Review of building plans including sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
Performs other duties related to inspection and code enforcement functions
• Compiles and maintains accurate records and statistics.
• Completes research, compiles and analyzes data.
• Attends professional development and training to maintain certifications.
• Provides information to Building Official or appropriate personnel.
• Answers questions, provides information, and explains reasons for regulations and policies.

Required Education and Experience
High school diploma; Three (3) years related experience and/or training in construction, engineering or a related
field
Preferred Education and Experience
Five (5) years related experience and/or training; or a bachelor’s degree from a college or university; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in construction, engineering or other related field.
Licenses and Certifications
The person in this position must have or obtain within two years of employment the following International Code
Council certifications: NFPA Certified Fire Plan Examiner. Must have a valid Missouri driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
• Knowledge of construction standards relating to civil, architectural, engineering, structural, mechanical,
electrical, and life safety requirements
• Knowledge of computer operations and applications, including word processing and spreadsheets
• Knowledge of federal and state statutes, city code, concerning the work of the department
• Knowledge of legal issues related to code enforcement and due process
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes identifying
customer needs, meeting standards for service and customer satisfaction

• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization, effective communication
skills orally and in writing
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and
procedure manuals
