The City of Clayton, Missouri, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Building Official. Under the direction of the Director of Planning and Development Services, this mid-level supervisory position directs and manages staff as well as coordinates the activities and operations of the Building Division which include: the building permit and plan review process, inspection activities, and code enforcement. The Building Officials acts as the lead in providing interpretations on the application of the City adopted code provisions (2015 International Building Codes), and alternative materials, designs, and methods. They will coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies as well as provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Community Development. This position also serves as the City’s Flood Plain Administrator. Work is performed with independence in making decisions that require sound judgment, discretion, and diplomacy with a high degree of customer service.

Compensation: We offer a competitive salary range and comprehensive benefits package. The starting pay for this position is set at $71,163 – $81,838 depending on qualifications with top earnings potential currently at $96,070 for the position’s pay grade. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required with additional training in Plan Review and knowledge of International Codes. Post-secondary education by technical instruction in building technology, construction management, mechanical, electrical, plumbing or building construction is preferred. Ten (10) years’ work experience or equivalent as an architect, engineer, inspection, contractor, or superintendent of construction or any combination thereof with a minimum of five (5) years including supervisory experience. The following certifications are required:
- International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Building Official (or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire)
- ICC Certification as a Commercial Building Inspector
- ICC Certification as a Plans Examiner
- ICC Certification in Commercial Plumbing and Mechanical (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
- Missouri Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) Preferred.
The successful candidate will possess a positive demeanor, be able to perform well under pressure and tight deadlines, must have outstanding communication skills and excel at customer service. They should have knowledge of legal procedures utilized in the enforcement of the City’s building, fire, and zoning codes. They will have an ability to objectively enforce regulations with consistency, firmness, impartiality, and tact. They will have an ability to establish professional and effective working relationships with developers, citizens, contractors, engineers, architects, city employees, and the general public. Proficiency in permitting software applications is a must.
