BUILDING INSPECTOR  

JOB SUMMARY:   This position is responsible for assisting in the application and enforcement oof all applicable property maintenance, building, construction and zoning codes and regulations as adopted by the City of Olivette. 

This position reports to the Director of Planning and Community Development.  This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, position with benefits including vacation, holidays, health, dental, life, long-term disability, pension and tuition assistance programs. 

SALARY RANGE: $46,147 – $64,000

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Code Enforcement – patrols, investigates and responds to structures within the City’s limits to monitor violations of maintenance codes.
  • Zoning administration – assists in the review and compliance of all structures with the City’s zoning regulations.
  • Permit Review – primarily reviews residential permit applications for construction, right-of-way usage, grading and stormwater management for compliance with all applicable Codes as adopted by the City Of Olivette.  Assists the Building Inspector II in the review of non-residential permit applications.
  • Inspections – primarily conducts residential inspections, including occupancy, to ensure that all phases of construction, alteration and repair adhere to plans, specifications and compliance with City codes.  Assists the Building Inspector II in non-residential inspections.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by date of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent AND a minimum of 3-5 years in construction trades or related field.
  • Knowledge of building and construction, including ability to read, understand and interpret construction plans.  Must have an understanding of common methods of construction.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, professional certifications through the International Code Council (ICC) as:
  • Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector (within 6 months of employment)
  • Residential Plans Examiner and Residential Building Inspector (within one year of employment)
  • Must have the ability to learn building related codes and ordinances adopted and enforced by the City, including currently adopted Building Codes and Zoning Ordinances.  Must also have the ability to Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Must have the ability to organize and process high volumes of work, often with many interruptions and competing deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to be resourceful and have initiative to perform with minimum supervision.
  • A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/GENERAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a very physical position, which requires a substantial amount of mobility in carrying out the essential duties of the position.  Continual walking, climbing, lifting, stooping and bending are required in the performance of duties related to inspections, both interior and exterior.

Must be able to access all locations/areas throughout the City, including inside houses, basements, crawl spaces, garages, roofs, etc.  Must be able to climb and walk on all types of terrain, including grass, rock, mud, concrete, brush/weeds, trees, inclines, etc., and be able to tolerate all kinds of weather, including rain, heat and cold temperatures.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 30 lbs.
