Job Title: Building and Code Inspector

Reports To: Development Services Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Codes Administration

Starting Salary Range: $40,000-$50,000

Summary:

The City of Peculiar is accepting applications from qualified candidates to serve as a full-time Building and Codes Inspector. The Building and Codes Inspector is responsible for all stages of minor permitting, performs inspections of new and remodeled structures, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Codes Department, interprets and enforces the building and property maintenance codes, and assists all other departments as required. The ideal candidate has previous municipal experience, is an exceptional communicator, and thrives in a busy and growing community.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Interacts with and advises builders and citizens on their individual building and code requirements.
  1. Conducts building, plumbing and electrical inspections of new and remodeled structures to ensure compliance with city code.
  1. Issues minor permits to include but not limited to, fence, pool, and roof permits.
  1. Conducts property inspections to ensure compliance with the Property Maintenance code.
  1. Issues code violation notices and tickets, maintains files and records of violations, issues tickets to violators and oversees cleanup, mowing and demolition as needed.
  1. Prepares and organizes files of permits and violations issued.
  1. Interprets and enforces the City’s building and property maintenance codes.
  1. Works closely with the public to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
  1. Assists other departments as needed during staff shortages and/or heavy workloads.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned by the City Administrator and Development Services Manager.

Qualifications:

Certificates and Licenses:

IRC (International Residential Code) Certification from ICC (International Code Council) to preform Building, Electrical and Plumbing Inspections.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree (B. A. / B. S.) in Construction Management or a closely related field from a four-year college or university is desirable.

Experience:

Minimum three years of new and remodeled structural inspection experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write notices and letters of compliance. Ability to make persuasive presentations on controversial codes topics to top management, citizens, and/or public boards.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as building or lot areas, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of building and property codes.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; design software and internet software.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:

  • Works with minimal supervision
  • Ability to multi-task
