Under direction performs work involved in, interpreting, inspecting and enforcing County Building Codes and County Zoning Ordinances and assuring the compliance with approved Building Permits. Requires independent decisions according to established procedures and codes. Practical knowledge of: 2006 Edition of the International Codes, 2005 National Electric Code, County Zoning regulations and other applicable Federal, state and local, laws, rules and ordinances. Ability to: Interpret technical information encountered in the performance of duties. Prepare detailed and accurate records. Work independently. Make accurate and detailed observations. Follow written and verbal instructions. Fulfill all physical requirement. Physical demands: Sit, stand, walk, climb, (i.e.: ladders, scaffolds, slopes, roofs, trenches), crawl (in attics or under flooring), and/or kneel for prolonged periods of time; sufficient mobility to work in and around construction projects; requires operating motorized vehicles; exposure to noise, dust and electrical energy. Exposure to varying weather conditions including extreme hot and cold temperatures and depending upon location of inspection site, isolated, remote areas. Education and Experience Guidelines – Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Ability to read plans and specifications. Knowledge of building and fire codes and other county ordinances. Knowledge of modern construction practices, methods and materials.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be able to pass a drug screening and criminal background check.

Schedules appropriate inspections and verifies eligibility for same. Opens code enforcement complaint files and assists in preparation and mailing of code enforcement correspondence. Forwards data to property owners and builders. Prepares reports and files pertaining to inspections and the licensing of contractors. Prepares routine correspondence for department staff as needed. Maintains and files all necessary paperwork, including reviewing for accuracy and completion. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a general or technical high school or equivalent and two years clerical experience including customer service, cash transactions, data entry, and record keeping. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Requires considerable skill in customer relations.
